Well now. I haven't had a violent, screaming nightmare like that in quite a long time. This does not bode well for tomorrow.

So, to share yesterday's good news.

Wednesday, I finally got to meet with and retain an immigration lawyer for Amanda and I. We're in a position where we can get this done finally, and it's time to make our move. The lawyer: Expensive, but already worth it. Confirms we've been doing most of the things right so far, and that we're pretty much a shoe-in as long as I can satisfy the money requirements to support her. (I should be able to.) He hears about our previous attempt a year and change ago, and asks for copies of the paperwork we did.

I got a call yesterday from the lawyer. He called the US consulate in Montreal and, using the information I gave him, has re-opened our case and had our old application ressurected. He just cut two months and $450 in government fees off the process for us, and made it so that all the work we did last year wasn't wasted. Now we're just waiting to hear back from the consulate and set up the final interview. Amanda may be down here as early as August.

Immigration lawyers: Expensive, but freaking worth it.

Attention fuckoff everybody in the world:

When they say that Christmas only comes once a year, this means that we're supposed to cherish it as a special time - a time for family, for peace, for caring. It DOES NOT MEAN that we should extend it for a month and a fucking half! When you have Christmas decorations up the day after Halloween, YOU ARE WRONG. When it's a week before Thanksgiving and you're already several days into showing nothing but Christmas specials, YOU ARE WRONG. There's this little thing called overdoing it, perhaps you should look it up.

I have found my Achilles' heel. The local Kiwanis raise money by leaving baskets at various local businesses. These baskets are full of candy for a buck. It just sits there, taunting. Waiting. Demanding.

...I need to stop keeping dollar bills in my pocket.

For those I haven't managed to get in contact with - Amanda's currently in the hospital. She went in this morning with stomach pains. Turns out she's got an infected gallbladder. They're hoping to do surgery tonight to remove it.

On one hand, this isn't so bad. From what I was told, this isn't life threatening. And she's not in pain, thanks to the wonders of massive painkiller dosages. Heck, it's even sort of good - she's been complaining of gallbladder problems for weeks, if not months, but she's refused to see a doctor about it. Now she's getting looked at and will be better.

On the other, my baby's hurtin' and not only is there nothing I can do about it, I can't even get there to see her. :( I'm worried sick and this sucks.

Note to self: Speak to co-worker about computer names. It's not helping my attempts to be Serious Business to look at the work network and see a computer named "Dicksputer".

Smoke Signal progresses apace. He's been defragging overnight to recover from the mass upload of utility programs. I'm not 100% done there, but my remaining choices are going to require a bit of research (I'm still trying to decide on where to go for my firewall and anti-virus needs).

This morning's task has been sorting through my plethora of game discs to decide what to load and what to store away. Some are obvious. Many are less so - I've got a number of games I've picked up on the cheap at garage sales and the like that I haven't really played, or it's been so long I can't remember them.

So tonight was the office park's annual dinner - every year they put up a tent and host a grillin' so the various businesses get to know each other. The food was good, but the conversation was dreadfully dull.

But the fun news is that I won the raffle and for $5 got a pair of Bills tickets for the Thanksgiving weekend game against the 49ers. $140 worth of tickets for $5? I'll take it!

The humorous bit is that two people won the draw before me - both had left already, so they lost their chance. After the second one, I quipped, "I'm starting to like these odds!". Then I won. Bing!

So I've got a laptop powering up behind me. I've always prefered desktops, but it was put to me - in no uncertain terms - that the job ahead really required a laptop to do well. So I picked one up. Right now, he's plugged into the wall behind me, cycling up the battery in preparation for life.

All my computers have had names. My very first - an all-original 1980 IBM PC AT, complete with 10 color monitor and a Hayes 2400 baud external modem - was named Smokeshifter. He was a good little machine. For a 286 operating in the late 1990s, he held his own pretty decently. (Cheeky little bastard wouldn't die until 1998, when the HD finally gave up the ghost - 18 years of life is pretty good for a computer.) He was followed by the first computer I ever bought, costing me every bit I'd scraped together over the summer at my first job. That one, I called Smoke Alarm.

The following years would bring a number of new machines - Smokein', Smoke Bomb (named for its propensity to explode without warning), Smoke On The Water, and Smoke 'n' Mirrors. Now, as I retire the old boy, I bring in the new guy - Smoke Signal. Go forth and be excellent, little guy.

And here's his specs.

Work's been really slow lately. I know this because we've been indulging in our most juviline humor more than usual lately. Now, normally when bored we start scouting around the customer database for funny names. We look like we're actually doing something that way. Usually we just pull out people with last names like Dix, Dik, or in one case Penix and giggle like teenagers at them. (The best one of those was the First Baptist Church of Cumming, Georgia. Their website being firstbaptistcumming.org. We laughed rather a lot at that one.) Today's winner wasn't vulgar, though.

The winner: Pepper Shakya.

What the hell were her parents thinking?

I realize that painting usually takes time. And that multiple coats are often needed.

But seriously. The ceiling was white to begin with. Then I gave it two coats of white primer, and I've gone over it with two more coats of white paint. I'm getting rather frustrated to hear "You missed a spot". IT'S ALL WHITE. I CAN'T MISS SPOTS, IT'S ALL BEEN THAT COLOR FOR TWENTY YEARS.

I've spent the last half hour working on the initial guest list.

Alright, so - just for reference, the previous post? Not an April Fool's joke. That said, things are moving.. fast now. I've been walking on air since I found out, but more importantly everything is moving very quickly. Our timetable's already semi-finalized - Amanda's move-down day is May 24th, so we can use the long Memorial Day weekend to our advantage. This means our 90 day window ends August 22nd. On both sides of the border, we're already in motion. By the time this goes up, Amanda's given her landlord notice of when she's leaving (RIGHT AMANDA?), and tomorrow's working on getting her passport renewed. On my end, this weekend is going to be the start of setting up the bigger room for when she gets here.

I can hardly believe the waiting is finally over. We made it.

Today at work, I stumbled across a name I MUST find a way to use for a future character in... in SOMETHING.

Kathryn Uebersax.

Say it with me. 'Uebersax'.

Okay, so sitting down to MAKE myself update more often. If I don't keep it up, I'll forget and put it off for another two years.

Stuff's been fairly quiet this week. Work's in a slow slump - I'm told it picks up after Easter, and right now is the lull. I hope so, I'm really running out of busywork to look occupied with. Even the rest of things have been pretty quiet. That's going to change though! While I get to work Good Friday, Amanda has off. Which means she's coming down! Sure, we only get a little time together (she arrives Friday, 7pm, and leaves Sunday, 2pm), but it's better than not having any. We're both pretty excited, too.

I also have a real interview tomorrow. It's another of the occasional bites I get from my constant resume barrage - this one's mostly notable because it's actually a pretty good one, rather than just some piddly entry job. Better than $10/hour, health coverage, the works. The location is inconvenient, but I can work around that for what they're offering. So here's hoping.
